Love Where You Local: Why the Winnipeg Folk Festival Will Always Feel Like Home
There are some places that become part of your story, and for me, the Winnipeg Folk Festival is one of them.
For the past 26 years, Folk Fest has been one of my favourite summer traditions. What started as a weekend of camping with friends has grown into something much bigger. It's become a place filled with memories, music, laughter, and the people I love most.
Now, I get to experience it through my daughter Anika's eyes as she creates her own Folk Fest traditions with friends. Watching those moments unfold has made this annual weekend even more meaningful.
More Than Just a Music Festival 🎶
Held every summer at Birds Hill Provincial Park, the Winnipeg Folk Festival has been bringing people together since 1974. What began as a one-day event has grown into one of Canada's most celebrated folk music festivals, welcoming artists and visitors from around the world while staying deeply connected to our local community.
Of course, the music is incredible. Every year I discover new artists that end up on my playlists long after the festival is over. But Folk Fest has always been about so much more than the performances.
It's about slowing down, reconnecting with friends, sharing meals, relaxing in the shade between shows, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
A Celebration of Local Community ❤️
One of my favourite parts of the Winnipeg Folk Festival is how much it celebrates local talent and small businesses.
The Handmade Village is always one of our first stops, showcasing beautiful work from Manitoba artisans and makers. From handmade clothing and jewelry to artwork and unique gifts, it's a wonderful reminder of how much creativity exists right here in our own community.
Supporting local has always been important to me, whether that's recommending neighbourhood businesses as a Winnipeg REALTOR®, volunteering in our community, or highlighting incredible local events through our Love Where You Local series.
Events like the Winnipeg Folk Festival help local artists, vendors, musicians, food businesses, and countless volunteers come together to create something truly special.
Traditions That Grow With You 🌿
One of the things I love most about Folk Fest is that it changes with every season of life.
There were the years of camping with a big group of friends, staying up late around the campsite and discovering new bands. Now there are afternoons exploring the festival with Anika, introducing her to live music, wandering through the artisan market, and watching her build friendships and memories of her own.
It's a reminder that some traditions don't stay exactly the same. They grow with us, becoming even more meaningful over time.
